Joy Tanner Inspiration

Greetings! In deciding what projects we would like to work on in the pottery class I'm taking our teacher Mark Knott asked the class to bring in a photograph of clay forms produced by other clay artist that we would like to figure out how to make. We choose the "Ewers" made by Joy Tanner. We tried various ways of creating the tops; either by closing the form then cutting out the opening or making the top from a slab and attaching; altering the shape; adding a handle; then last but not least glazing. This was a fun project and there were many variations. I hope to get photos of the other students inspirations when they are finished, but right now all I have are the ones that I made. Mine are much smaller than Joys' and not soda fired.... but I was happy with the outcome! Thanks to Joy Tanner for the inspiration!

My friend Vicki's last kiln firing

My friend Vicki and her husband Greg built this kiln maybe a couple of years ago now, and it has seasoned nicely. The results of the firings are getting better and better. I thought I would share some photos of the most recent firing. The pots that you see here are the work of three talented ceramic artists; Vicki, Carol and Connie who I hope will let me in the future highlight some of their pieces here on my blog.
Thanks for visiting!

Fong Choo Workshop

I recently attended a workshop featuring the miniature teapot ceramic artist Fong Choo at the Spruill Arts Center. If you ever have the chance of attending one of his workshops, go! My friend Vicki and I went for this two day event and when I returned to my studio I realize I had a new eye for my little pots. I'm looking forward to applying techniques that I learned, especially in form and glazing. I'll keep you posted. I did get a compliment in a way from Fong...he didn't say my teapots were cute.
